Education (EDN)
All EDN courses numbered 100 and above may be applied to the major field and elective requirement for the Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees.
Students who want to seek licensure in the state of Illinois as elementary teachers are urged to develop an educational plan with an ECC advisor regarding the selection of ALL courses. The courses you will take at ECC with plans to transfer to a four-year college/university will differ based on which institution you plan to attend. When planning your courses, please note ECC offers pre-education courses through the Education Department as well as education related courses in literature, math, music, psychology, and physical education.

EDN 100 Introduction to Education (3)(3,0)
This course will introduce the topic of education both as a professional pursuit, and as an institution. Students will study historical, social, and philosophical foundations of education, as well as organizational structure, school governance, legal and ethical issues. The Introduction to Paraprofessional Education course provides an overview of the paraprofessional position, role and responsibilities. This course will prepare participants for career as a paraprofessional educator, instructional aide or teacher assistant. EDN 103 Paraprofessional Clinical Experience (2)(2,0)
This course provides opportunity for observation or clinical experience in preK -12 settings for students who want to pursue a paraprofessional career. This course offers 35-40 hours of hands-on experience through, shadowing, service learning, tutoring, before and after school learning experiences. This course will meet as needed on campus for preparing, processing and reflecting upon pre-clinical experience. This course is repeatable 2 times. This course provides hands-on experience in using technology for education majors. Content includes finding, analyzing, organizing, presenting and implementing information related to use of technology in education; analyzing role of technology in education in society; developing strategies to compensate for possible digital divide among students. Documented clinical experience involving observation of and interaction with children and practitioners at work, according to specified guidelines, within the appropriate subject matter and age category.
